Vaccines - Dogs and Cats

  1. What vaccines do you recommend for my new puppy?

We recommend vaccination every 3 weeks until they are 16 weeks of age with DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus) starting at 6 to 8 weeks.  At 12 weeks, they can receive a rabies vaccination.

  2. Is there a specific vaccine you recommend?

We use Vanguard Plus 5 for all our canine patients.  It provides broader protection against the two primary types of parvovirus that affect dogs less than 1 year of age.

  1. What is the best age to have my colt castrated?

This procedure can be done at just about any age.  If we have our way, we do prefer to do it just prior to weaning so that the mare can be with your colt during his recovery.  They recover extremely well and we feel that no appreciable difference in stature is noticed by the time they reach five years.  We perform this procedure during the early spring and fall months, trying to stay away from blistering hot days and those that are too cold.

  2. What vaccines do you recommend?

We design and choose our vaccine protocols based on the current and intended use of your horse/s within the current calender year.  Our recommendations can also be influenced by your neighbors and friends as well and may include a simple 3-way with west nile virus to an expanded protocol that includes modified live vaccines for flu and rhino.  Give us a call to discuss our programs in more detail for your specific needs.
